They turned aside&nbsp;after dishonest gain and accepted bribes&nbsp;and perverted&nbsp;justice. So all the elders&nbsp;of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.They said to him, \u201cYou are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king&nbsp;to lead&nbsp;us, such as all the other nations&nbsp;have.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><strong>1 Samuel 8:1-5<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>We Reject God When We Demand Earthly \u201cKings\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But when they said, \u201cGive us a king&nbsp;to lead us,\u201d this displeased&nbsp;Samuel; so he prayed to the&nbsp;Lord.&nbsp;And the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;told him: \u201cListen&nbsp;to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected,&nbsp;but they have rejected me as their king.As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking&nbsp;me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.&nbsp;Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know&nbsp;what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <strong>1 Samuel 8:6-9<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><strong>Jeremiah 2:13<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Earthly Kings Always Take<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Samuel told&nbsp;all the words of the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;to the people who were asking him for a king.He said, \u201cThis is what the king who will reign over you will claim as his rights: He will take&nbsp;your sons and make them serve&nbsp;with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.Some he will assign to be commanders&nbsp;of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plow his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.He will take the best of your&nbsp;fields and vineyards&nbsp;and olive groves and give them to his attendants.He will take a tenth&nbsp;of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants.Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle&nbsp;and donkeys he will take for his own use.He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;will not answer&nbsp;you in that day.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><strong>1 Samuel 8:10-18<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Woe to the obstinate children,\u201d declares the Lord, \u201cto those who carry out plans that are not mine\u2026 who go down to Egypt without consulting me; who look for help\u2026 but not look to the Holy One of Israel.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><strong>Isaiah 30:1-2<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><strong>John 10:10<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Only God Gives What We Truly Need<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>But the people refused&nbsp;to listen to Samuel. \u201cNo!\u201d they said. \u201cWe want&nbsp;a king&nbsp;over us.&nbsp;Then we will be like all the other nations,&nbsp;with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.\u201d&nbsp;When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated&nbsp;it before the&nbsp;Lord.&nbsp;The&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;answered, \u201cListen&nbsp;to them and give them a king.\u201d Then Samuel said to the Israelites, \u201cEveryone go back to your own town.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/em><strong>1 Samuel 8:19\u201320<\/strong><em><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>He who did not spare his own Son,&nbsp;but gave him up for us all\u2014how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?&nbsp; <\/em><strong>Romans 8:32<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Dethrone Your False Kings<\/strong><\/h4>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Samuel grew old, he appointed&nbsp;his sons as Israel\u2019s leaders.The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah,&nbsp;and they served at Beersheba.But his sons&nbsp;did not follow his ways.
