In the New Testament, the apostle Paul describes the church as one body with many parts, joined together under Christ as the head (1 Corinthians 12; Romans 12). That image raises important questions: Who truly belongs? Who decides which parts matter most? What does real spiritual health look like? And how should the body respond when one member is hurting?
Rather than measuring success by visibility, size, or efficiency, the focus shifts to humility, mutual dependence, and shared responsibility. When we move toward one another in belonging, cooperation, and shared suffering, the body reflects Christ more clearly — not by being impressive, but by being faithful and aligned under Him.
Who Belongs In The Body?
The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
Who Decides Which Parts Matter Most?
If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? 1 Corinthians 12:15-16
In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 1 Corinthians 12:22
How Do We Recognize Health?
Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. Romans 12:4-5
How Do We Respond To Pain In The Body?
If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. 1 Corinthians 12:26
Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2
Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep. Romans 12:15
