The Promise Of The Holy Spirit

The Promise Of The Holy Spirit

Often the Holy Spirit is the most overlooked and misunderstood member of the Godhead. To truly understand the work of the Holy Spirit in New Testament times we must first start by understanding the Old Testament prophecies.

This week Pastor Tommy Sprinkle examines two key passages in the Old Testament prophesying the ministry of the Holy Spirit today.

1. Holy Spirit and Salvation

“Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. Your filth will be washed away, and you will no longer worship idols. 26 And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. 27 And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.  Ezekiel 36:25-27

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.  John 14:15-17

When God our Savior revealed his kindness and love, 5 he saved us, not because of the righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He washed away our sins, giving us a new birth and new life through the Holy Spirit.  Titus 3:4-5

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God?   1 Corinthians 6:19

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you.  Romans 8:11

Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.   1 Corinthians 12:13

2. Baptism In The Holy Spirit

Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. 29 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants – men and women alike.  Joel 2:28-29

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.  Acts 1:8

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability.  Acts 2:4

No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:  Acts 2:16

And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.  Luke 24:49

I baptize with water those who repent of their sins and turn to God. But someone is coming soon who is greater than I am – so much greater that I’m not worthy even to be his slave and carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.  Matthew 3:11
